SVSU Offers Self-Paced and Interactive Program Meets Needs of Changing Legal Market

SVSU announces the launch of its Online Executive Certificate in Paralegal Studies, offered in partnership with Dalton Education, a leading provider of innovative online education programs. Designed to meet the changing needs of the legal profession, which is relying more heavily on trained and skilled paralegals, the six-course certificate can be completed in six months, and students will develop a host of sought-after professional skills.

Since the downturn in the economy five years ago, law firms have been restructuring and changing their hiring patterns. Many small and medium firms plan to expand their team with skilled paralegals rather than newly minted lawyers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects positions for paralegals will grow by 28% in the next decade.

SVSU's Online Executive Certificate in Paralegal Studies includes job placement, interviewing and resume assistance to enrolled students. Some of the courses offered include: Legal Research and Writing, Civil Litigation, Torts, and Contracts. Students can participate from home or the office at times convenient with their schedules.

"The Great Lakes Bay Region is home to an extremely high concentration of small and medium-sized law firms," said Monica Reyes, Director of Office of Continuing Ed & Professional Development. "In keeping with our history of enabling people to upgrade their skills or transition into another career, our Paralegal Certificate program will produce highly skilled paralegal professionals, who can immediately make a difference in the workplace. We are pleased to partner with Dalton Education to offer this paralegal program."

SVSU’s Office of Continuing Education & Professional Development seeks to serve the legal community as a partner in education for law firms, banks, and other businesses in need of paralegal services. Through the university's Executive Certificate in Paralegal Studies, firms and business can train their current office workforce to prepare them for even greater responsibilities in the legal profession.
